Understanding the Climate Action Incentive Rebate for 2024

by

What Are Climate Action Incentive Payments (CAIP) aka Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR)?

Climate Action Incentive Payments (CAIP), now known as the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR), are Canada’s approach to motivate citizens towards a greener lifestyle. By financially rewarding actions that reduce carbon emissions, this initiative complements the country’s environmental policies.

Who Gets the Canada Carbon Rebate?

The CCR is available to eligible residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes
  • Live in one of the participating provinces
  • File your taxes, even if you have no income to report

When Do We Get the Canada Carbon Rebate in 2024?

In 2024, the CCR payment dates will depend on when you file your personal tax return. For the April 15, 2024 payment, you must file your 2023 personal tax return electronically by March 15, 2024. Generally, payment dates fall on:

  • January 15
  • April 15
  • July 15
  • October 15

How Much Can You Expect to Receive?

The rebate amount varies by province, family size, and whether you’re in a rural or urban setting. Here’s an example of quarterly payment amounts for the 2023-2024 fiscal year:

Province First Adult Second Adult Each Child Under 19
Alberta $193 $96.50 $48.25
Ontario $122 $61 $30.50
Manitoba $132 $66 $33

Rural vs. Metropolitan Areas

Residents in rural areas are eligible for a supplement to the base amount. This supplement is increasing from 10% to 20% starting in April 2024, recognizing the higher energy costs in rural communities.

Applying for the Canada Carbon Rebate

There’s no separate application process for the CCR. Eligibility is determined through your annual tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency. To ensure you receive your payments, make sure to file your taxes on time each year.
